May
May with True Travel
Where to go in May
May is one of those months when Europe feels like a secret. The weather is warming, but the great summer migration of visitors has yet to begin. We love it for slow journeys through Italy, Portugal and Greece — long lunches, beautiful hotels, vineyards and villages where life is still following its normal rhythm.
In Rwanda, the forests are wonderfully lush after the rains. Gorilla trekking can be wetter, but the landscapes are spectacular and the trails quieter. For adventurous families with older children or couples looking for something genuinely extraordinary, this can be a very rewarding time to go.
Across Latin America, May is when Peru starts to become particularly compelling. The Andes are drying out, skies are clearing and conditions are excellent for combining Machu Picchu with the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca or a longer journey through the country.
It is also a wonderful time for Mexico if you want to look beyond the beaches. Explore the Yucatán’s cenotes and Mayan ruins, head into the colonial heartland or combine Mexico City with Oaxaca for an immersion in art, architecture and some of Latin America’s most exciting food.
