Where to go in October

October is a month of changing seasons and excellent contrasts. In southern Africa, the dry season is drawing to a close and wildlife gathers around the remaining water, making Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia particularly compelling for a safari. But it is also a wonderful time to head west.

In Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, wildlife is the star. Sea lions, marine iguanas, giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies make the islands extraordinary at any time of year, but travelling with an expert naturalist brings a deeper understanding of this remarkable ecosystem. Pair the islands with the cloud forests or colonial Quito for a journey that goes far beyond a beach-and-wildlife escape.

Further south, Australia is beginning to warm into spring. October is a particularly good time for a journey that combines the country’s very different landscapes — from Sydney and the Blue Mountains to the Great Barrier Reef, the vineyards of South Australia or the wild coastlines of Tasmania. It is also an excellent month for families, before the peak Christmas and summer holiday period.

Last but not least, Morocco is one of our favourite October escapes. The intense heat of summer has eased, making it a wonderful time to explore Marrakech, disappear into the Atlas Mountains or head south towards the desert. Days are warm, evenings are cooler and the country feels made for combining places — a few nights in a beautiful riad, time in the mountains and perhaps a night or two beneath the stars in the desert. For us, October is when Morocco really comes into its own.
