Where to go in January

Head to Tanzania’s southern Serengeti when the plains become a nursery. Around Ndutu, the arrival of the rains brings thousands upon thousands of wildebeest calves into the world — and with them, an extraordinary concentration of predators. It is one of those rare moments when the drama of the Serengeti unfolds almost continuously around you.

Or go to the opposite extreme. January is when we’d send you south to Antarctica, when endless daylight makes the white wilderness feel almost otherworldly. Kayak between icebergs, watch penguins launch themselves from the water and linger on deck as whales surface in the stillness.

For something warmer, Sri Lanka is a wonderful January secret: combine ancient cities and leopard-filled national parks with the beaches of the south coast, where the season is at its best.

For Latin America, January is summer at its most inviting. Costa Rica is in its dry season, making it an excellent time to combine rainforest wildlife with the Pacific coast. In Patagonia, long days and settled weather open up some of South America’s most spectacular hiking, while further north, Brazil’s beaches are in full summer swing.
