Gora Kadan

Feature Property Spotlight

Our feature property journals are designed to highlight and showcase our favourite properties from around the world, taking a closer look at some of the magnificent properties that we love to send our clients to.
In our latest feature, we showcase Gora Kadan in Japan, a luxurious ryokan originally a villa for the imperial lineage, now offering a personal journey for guests, complete with exquisite sushi crafted by master chefs.

An Imperial Jewel

Gora Karan began as a villa for the Kaninnomiya family, a branch of the Japanese imperial lineage, built during the early Showa era (1926-1989). This villa was originally designed to serve as a retreat for imperial royalty, offering an escape from the bustling life of the city. The architecture of the place was a reflection of the era’s elegance, combining traditional Japanese design with the understated luxury befitting its noble occupants.

This historic villa was meticulously transformed into a luxury ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) and reopened as Gora Kadan. Every effort was made to maintain the integrity of the original design, from the use of traditional materials to the careful preservation of the villa’s architectural details. The design reflects traditional Japanese aesthetics, with architectural elements that honour its imperial heritage.

Today, Gora Kadan stands as a symbol of refined Japanese hospitality, modern luxury, and comfort, providing guests with an immersive experience in traditional Japanese cutlure.

The Heart of Japanese Omotenashi

At Gora Kadan, “omotenashi“, the deeply rooted Japanese art of hospitality, is at the heart of every guest’s experience. This philosophy of anticipating and attending to guests’ needs with sincere care is evident from the moment they arrive. The attentive staff thoughtfully personalise every aspect of your stay, whether it’s creating the perfect room ambiance to match your preferences, selecting seasonal flowers for decoration, or greeting you warmly with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Their commitment is to ensure that you feel truly welcomed and cherished throughout your stay.

This commitment to hospitality is also evident in the personalised services offered during your stay. Guests receive custom-designed yukata (Japanese robes), tailored to their preferences and the season. Meals are thoughtfully prepared to match individual dietary needs and tastes, with personal touches added based on guest feedback, ensuring that each dish is both satisfying and uniquely catered to you.

By focusing on these thoughtful details, Gora Karan exemplifies the true essence of “omotenashi“, turning a luxurious stay into a profoundly personal journey.

A New Dimension in Sushi Art

Sushi Kadan, the exclusive sushi restaurant within Gora Kadan, offers a refined and intimate dining experience that showcases the true art of sushi. Here, highly skilled chefs, who have mastered their craft over many years, focus on bringing out the natural flavours of the freshest ingredients. The restaurant uses seasonal ingredients to ensure every dish is at its best, following the Japanese tradition of “shun”, which values ingredients at their peak. The sushi is made using traditional techniques passed down through generations, resulting in dishes that are spectacular in appearance and exceptionally delicious. A standout example is their Toro Nigiri, where the chef’s precise preparation highlights the rich, buttery texture of the fatty tuna, making it a true delicacy.

The dining experience at Sushi Kadan is calm and elegant, with only a few seats available to create a personalised and immersive atmosphere. The restaurant’s design follows traditional Japanese styles, focusing on simplicity, elegance, and a connection to nature. Guests can enjoy an “omakase” dining style, where the chef prepares a multi-course meal tailored to their preferences, allowing guests to experience the chef’s artistry firsthand.

It’s an opportunity to savour not just the exquisite flavours, but also the history and craftsmanship that make each meal truly special.
