Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, located at 12,507ft (3,812m) and straddles the border of Peru and Bolivia, who are constantly disputing who has the more beautiful side of the lake! The Bolivian side benefits from having the mountains in the background, which is truly a beautiful sight. Copacabana is the main town on the Bolivian side of the lake, with a pretty, sandy beach (Copacabana beach in Rio took its name from here!). When you visit Lake Titicaca, you travel by boat to the serene Sun and Moon Islands, which are overflowing with ancient history and fascinating traditions of the local communities who live there. You will have the chance to llama-trek up to your locally run lodge on Sun Island and enjoy traditional (and truly delicious) meals and wake up to an unforgettable sunrise over the lake.If travelling from the Peru side, one of our favourite ways to reach the highest navigable lake on earth is by train. Travelling from Cusco to Puno along some of the highest train routes in the world, the view from your window is a display of magnificent Andean scenery. Stylish accommodation is scarce in this region, but the timeless waters of Lake Titicaca are worth the journey. Discover floating islands made entirely from totora reeds where small communities dressed in brightly patterned clothing go about their daily lives.Regardless which side you visit from, if you are interested in photography, the colours of Lake Titicaca will have you transfixed.
