Mexico City
Walk into Mexico City’s central square, the Zocalo, for the first time and the scale of this capital, home to more than 20 million people, becomes immediately clear. A flag the size of a swimming pool flies at its centre, ringed by imposing colonial buildings that have watched over the square for centuries. It is a fitting introduction to a city that moves at enormous speed but never quite lets go of its history.
