Quito
Quito sits at over 2,800 metres in the Andes, and its historic centre was among the first sites in the world to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A couple of days here is worth building into any Galapagos itinerary, giving time to walk the colonial old town before crossing into the newer quarters with their galleries and modern architecture. Few capital cities pair that sense of history with such a dramatic setting.
