Bogota tends to get overlooked in favour of Cartagena’s colour or Medellin’s climate, which is a mistake. Colombia’s capital is the country’s intellectual and cultural centre, home to the Museo del Oro’s extraordinary collection of pre-Columbian gold and a historic La Candelaria district worth a full day’s wandering on foot. At altitude and often overcast, it is a different Colombia to the coast, but no less rewarding for it.
