The Pantanal is the largest tropical wetland on earth. At 42 million acres, this massive expanse of waterways and marshes is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. Best visited in Brazil (the Pantanal also spreads into Bolivia and Paraguay), where luxury eco-lodges and expert conservationists will take guests into the heart of this fragile and fascinating ecosystem. Our favourite time of year to visit the Pantanal is between May and August when skies tend to be blue, and the wildlife is easier to see. The endemic jaguar moves closer to the riverbanks to feed, and rainbow flashes of macaw feed on the salty clay. The Pantanal is a perfect retreat for any budding wildlife photographer.
