Salar de Uyuni
The Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, over 10,000 square kilometres of blinding white crust left behind by a prehistoric lake, and in the wet season a thin layer of water turns the entire surface into a mirror. Islands of ancient cacti break up the flat in places, and multi-day crossings typically continue into the coloured lagoons and geysers of the surrounding altiplano. Few landscapes in South America are quite as disorienting, or as photographed, as this one.
