La Paz
La Paz sits at 3,635 metres above sea level, making it the highest administrative capital city in the world, while Sucre remains Bolivia’s constitutional capital. Flying in, you actually land in El Alto, a city perched some 500 metres higher still, and the thinner air announces itself the moment you step off the plane. Give yourself a day to acclimatise before doing much more than wandering the steep streets and taking in the view down into the valley below.
