Barcelona moves at a relaxed pace for a city its size, helped by a near-constant supply of sunshine and a fiercely independent Catalan identity that shapes everything from its food to its politics. Arguably better known internationally than Madrid, it built its reputation on Gaudí’s astonishing architecture, a serious food and art scene, and beaches within walking distance of the old town. Few cities let you move between culture and coastline quite so easily.
