Douro Valley
The Douro Valley in northern Portugal earned its UNESCO World Heritage status for good reason, its steep terraced vineyards climbing the riverbanks in tight, ordered rows that have shaped the landscape for centuries. Travelling up the river by boat remains the best way to take it in, with the terraces unfolding slowly at the pace of the current rather than a car window. It is a region that rewards a slower kind of travel.
