Sicily
Sicily feels like several destinations rolled into one island, shaped in equal measure by Greek, Roman and Arab influence. Ancient temples rise from wildflower meadows, Mount Etna looms over the east coast, and every town has its own character. It is best explored slowly, driving from Palermo to Taormina via Syracuse, with plenty of stops for arancini and granita along the way. Few Italian islands offer this much variety.
