Florence
Florence rewards slow walking more than any checklist. Turn a corner and there is Michelangelo’s David, or the Duomo’s dome catching the late afternoon light. The historic centre is compact enough to explore properly on foot, and the art inside the Uffizi and Accademia is worth the queues. It works well as a long weekend on its own, or as the opening chapter of a longer trip through Tuscany.
