Luxury holidays in Switzerland

Switzerland Mountain villages, pristine lakes, local cheeses and some of Europe’s finest Alpine retreats

Switzerland with True Travel

Where Swiss precision meets Alpine pleasure

You’re not meant to have favourites, but Switzerland has quietly become one of ours. Our Europe team keeps finding reasons to return, drawn back by its spectacular mountain scenery and glassy lakes, excellent Alpine cuisine – think local cheeses, rösti and long lunches with a view – and collection of high-altitude retreats where luxury comes naturally. It’s also home to some of the best hotels in the Alps. Ride the Glacier Express through the mountains, explore the elegant streets of Zurich or Geneva, or head into the Alps for hiking, skiing and fresh mountain air. With charming villages, impeccable hospitality and scenery that never gets old, Switzerland is a favourite for good reason.

Specialist Tip

Rail is one of the best and most scenic ways to explore Switzerland. Trains are comfortable, punctual and often an experience in themselves, particularly mountain routes such as the cog railway to car-free Wengen, where the journey is every bit as memorable as the destination.

Places in Switzerland

Jungfrau Our Favourite Places Jungfrau The Jungfrau region, anchored by the town of Interlaken between two turquoise lakes, gives access to some of the most dramatic scenery in the Swiss Alps. The Jungfraujoch railway climbs to 3,454 metres, the highest railway station in Europe, cut through solid rock and finished in 1912, with views across the Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps. Paragliding, hiking and simply riding the mountain trains are all part of the appeal, and the region rewards several days rather than a single visit.

Switzerland Accommodation

A Taste of Where We Stay

Sometimes the place you stay is an experience in its own right. From a grand lakeside hotel overlooking Lake Geneva to a secluded mountain retreat surrounded by the Alps, the right property can become one of the defining moments of a journey. We know the hotels that make the most of their setting, as well as the places that simply get everything right. Discover our hand-picked luxury accommodation in Switzerland.

Lauterbrunnen

Grand Hotel Belvedere

Perched above the shores of Lake Lucerne, Grand Hotel Belvedere brings a fresh take on classic Swiss glamour. Its elegant interiors, panoramic lake views and serene spa make it an easy place to slow down, while the mountains beyond invite exploration. Spend your days hiking alpine trails, cruising across the lake or simply lingering over lunch on the terrace, before returning to the hotel for an evening of excellent food and quiet sophistication.

Zürich

La Réserve Eden au Lac

La Réserve Eden au Lac feels like a slice of the Mediterranean dropped onto Lake Zurich. Inside, Philippe Starck’s interiors bring a mischievous, nautical edge to the hotel’s historic bones, while the rooftop bar looks out across the lake and Alps. It’s close enough to the city’s galleries, boutiques and bars, but feels deliciously removed from them. Come for the setting; stay for the sense of escape.

Obbürgen

Bürgenstock Resort

High above Lake Lucerne, Bürgenstock Resort is Alpine grandeur on an extraordinary scale. Spread across a private mountain estate, it combines beautifully designed hotels, destination restaurants and one of Europe’s most impressive spas, all framed by cinematic views across the lake and peaks beyond. Days unfold between leisurely lunches, mountain walks and long hours in the spa, while evenings bring a quieter kind of glamour. It’s polished, secluded and wonderfully indulgent.

What our guests say

From the travel and transfers to the lodging, it was the most magical and perfect trip that we will remember for the rest of our lives. The hotels were beautiful and luxurious, with the most amazing staff. Every day was 10/10, and the trip was so well balanced with adventure and relaxation.

Amy, UK

It was one of the best trips I've ever done, and 95% of that was down to True Travel and their team. The organisation was perfect, as was each destination and guide. I hope I can travel again with them soon.

Fatima, Spain

True Travel arranged all our internal flights and transport, which ran like clockwork. Each accommodation was lovely, as was being able to explore Ecuador's varied regions and amazing people, culture and animals. As usual, True Travel delivered a seamless trip.

Jane, UK

My sister and I spent 12 days in Cambodia, planned by True Travel. Everything went perfectly. We stayed in four different amazing locations, had wonderful guides and drivers, and did so many different activities. The team at True Travel were really easy to deal with and great at communicating.

Best trip ever. This trip was awesome. We were treated like royalty. We were taken care of from beginning to end. We saw everything we expected and then some. The accommodations were fabulous. I could go on forever, but just to say everything was planned to perfection to the finest detail. I hope to use them again and will recommend True Travel to everyone. A trip we'll never forget.

Jean, USA

The True Travel team provided excellent service throughout, from initial planning and finalising the details to support during the trip. They were extremely knowledgeable about Australia, including off-the-beaten-path destinations, boutique hotels and restaurants. Their local partner was always on hand to help with any issues or changes. Using True Travel meant I could relax and enjoy the trip without worrying about the logistics or small details.

Quick Answers

Common Questions

  • What's the best way to get around?

Switzerland’s rail network is one of the most complete in the world, and the trains run to a schedule you can actually rely on. Panoramic routes like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express are worth building a day around in their own right, not just a way to get from one place to another. For a trip that moves between cities, lakes and mountain resorts, trains and cable cars will usually get you there more easily than a car, especially in winter when mountain passes can close.

  • What language do people speak?

Switzerland has four official languages, and which one you’ll hear depends entirely on where you are. Zurich, Lucerne and Bern are German-speaking, Geneva and Lausanne are French-speaking, and Ticino, around Lugano, is Italian-speaking. English is widely spoken in hotels and tourist areas throughout the country, so this is more a point of interest than a practical concern.

  • What currency is used, and do I need cash?

Switzerland uses the Swiss franc, not the euro, despite being surrounded by eurozone countries. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including small cafés and mountain restaurants, though it’s worth carrying some cash for rural villages or self-service honesty stalls, which are common in farming areas.

  • Is Switzerland part of the EU?

It’s a point that catches people out: Switzerland is in the Schengen Area, so there’s no passport control when arriving from most neighbouring countries, but it isn’t an EU member. This rarely affects a trip in any practical way, though it’s worth knowing before you assume EU roaming or customs rules automatically apply.

  • When is the best time to visit?

It depends entirely on what you want from the trip. Winter turns the Alps into ski country, with resorts such as Zermatt, St Moritz and Verbier at their busiest, while warmer months bring the hiking trails and lake regions to life, when Lake Geneva and Lake Lucerne are at their best for swimming. Quieter shoulder periods bring lower prices and fewer crowds, though some higher-altitude cable cars and trails may run a reduced service outside their main season.

  • Can I drink the tap water?

Yes, and it’s worth knowing this extends well beyond the tap. Zurich alone has well over a thousand public drinking fountains, and the water running from almost all of them is safe to drink, drawn from the same supply as the city’s tap water. The only exception is a fountain marked ‘Kein Trinkwasser’ (or ‘eau non potable’ in French-speaking regions), which means it isn’t for drinking.

  • What should I pack?

Layers matter more here than almost anywhere else in Europe, since temperatures can shift substantially between a valley town and a mountain summit reached by cable car within the same afternoon. Sturdy, broken-in shoes are worth prioritising if hiking is part of the trip, and a swimsuit is easy to forget but useful even outside summer, since several hotels and spa towns have thermal pools open year-round.

  • Is tipping expected?

Service is included in restaurant and hotel bills by law, so there’s no need to calculate a percentage the way you might elsewhere. Rounding up a bill or leaving small change for good service is appreciated but not expected, and taxi drivers are typically tipped the same way.

  • Do I need travel insurance for mountain activities?

If skiing, hiking at altitude or glacier excursions are part of the plan, it’s worth checking that a travel insurance policy specifically covers mountain sports and altitude-related activities, since standard policies don’t always include them as standard.

  • What food is worth trying beyond fondue?

Fondue and raclette get most of the attention, and rightly so, but rösti, a pan-fried shredded potato dish, varies significantly by region and is worth trying more than once. Switzerland also produces chocolate at a level that’s genuinely difficult to compare to anywhere else, and a visit to a producer such as Läderach or Sprüngli offers a far better introduction than a supermarket bar ever could.

  • Is altitude sickness a real concern?

For anyone travelling above roughly 2,500 metres, which includes several popular viewpoints such as Jungfraujoch or the Matterhorn glacier paradise, mild symptoms like headaches or breathlessness are possible even for people who are otherwise fit and healthy. Taking it slowly on arrival at altitude and staying hydrated is usually enough to manage it.

  • Is it true you can stand in three countries at once?

Switzerland’s borders create a handful of genuine tripoints, the most accessible being near Basel, where Switzerland, France and Germany meet at a single spot on the Rhine. It’s a small, easy detour rather than a destination in its own right, but a memorable one if timings allow.
