Napier
Napier, on New Zealand’s east coast, was almost entirely rebuilt in the Art Deco style after a devastating 1931 earthquake, leaving one of the most complete collections of Art Deco architecture anywhere in the world. The Hawke’s Bay wine region surrounds the town, among New Zealand’s oldest and best regarded, making a wine-focused day trip an easy addition. It offers a genuinely different pace and look to the rest of a North Island itinerary, worth the detour on its own account.
