Mai Chau is a farming valley in northern Vietnam, home to Thai and Muong communities who still live in traditional stilt houses among rice paddies. It makes an easy, low-key contrast to Hanoi, just a few hours away, with gentle hikes and bicycle rides along tracks between villages and market stalls selling local textiles. It is not a place of major sights so much as a place to slow down, and that is exactly its appeal.
