Luang Prabang’s entire old town carries UNESCO World Heritage status, and it is easy to see why once you have watched the saffron-robed monks make their morning almsround past French colonial shopfronts and gilded temples. Wat Xieng Thong is the most celebrated of these, its low, elegant roofline the classic mark of Luang Prabang style. The night market along the main street is a good measure of the town’s unhurried character, better suited to browsing than serious shopping.
