Zanzibar Island
Zanzibar Island lies around 25 miles off Tanzania’s coast, its Stone Town a dense maze of coral-stone buildings, carved doors and spice markets that trace centuries of Swahili, Arab and Indian trade. Beyond the town, white-sand beaches ring much of the coastline, warmed by the Indian Ocean and well suited to a few days unwinding after a mainland safari. Spice tours through the island’s plantations, still growing cloves, cinnamon and vanilla, are a popular and genuinely interesting add-on.
