Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater forms the centrepiece of the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area, established in 1959 as a multiple land use area where wildlife and semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists share the same ground. The crater itself is the world’s largest intact caldera, its floor a self-contained ecosystem of grassland, forest and soda lake packed with game. Descending the crater wall in the early morning mist, before the day’s vehicles arrive, remains one of the most atmospheric starts to any safari day.
