Moroccan Sahara
The Moroccan Sahara, reached via Merzouga or Zagora, is where the country’s desert reputation is properly earned: the dunes at Erg Chebbi rise to nearly 150 metres, shifting colour through the day from gold to deep red at sunset. Camel treks and 4×4 crossings are the usual way in, with nights spent in desert camps under skies with almost no light pollution. It takes a longer drive than Agafay to reach, but the scale of the dunes here is the real thing.
