High Atlas Mountains
The Atlas Mountains run from Morocco’s Atlantic coast all the way through to Algeria and Tunisia, with the High Atlas forming the range’s highest and most rugged stretch. These peaks act as a genuine weather barrier, holding back the Sahara to the south while the Mediterranean climate persists to the north. For anyone escaping the heat of Marrakech, a couple of days in a Berber village at altitude changes the temperature and the pace of things almost immediately.
