Rocky hills of the Agafay Desert with snow-covered Atlas Mountains beyond, Morocco

Agafay Desert

The Agafay Desert lies less than an hour from Marrakech, a stony, rolling landscape that gives a genuine taste of the Sahara without the long drive south. Berber villages dot the hills, and camel treks at sunset, followed by dinner under canvas, have made Agafay a popular add-on for travellers short on time. It lacks the scale and dunes of the true Sahara further south, but as an easy escape from the city it works well, particularly for a single night under the stars.
