The resorts on this coast are few and far between and the area is all the better for it with some of the country’s best beaches. Luxury and exclusivity is what springs to mind for those choosing to stay in the area. While staying, no trip to the East Coast would be complete without a visit to the stunning island of Ile aux Cerfs, located in the lagoon of Trou d’eau Douce. Home to perhaps the world’s most beautiful beaches and endless snorkelling spots, Ile aux Cerfs is an absolute must. A world away from the more populated areas of Mauritius, the veritable peace and calm found here on the East Coast in absolute rarity. It is important to note that the breeze which is so welcome on the East Coast during the hot and humid months can become a problem during the windier season from June through to September, trade winds affect this un-sheltered side of the island and can impact your experience to the extent the beach is a no go area.
The “beautiful” south is the island’s wilder but perhaps more interesting with its wonderfully dramatic scenery. There are fewer swimming beaches here, and therefore less development with a few clutches of hotels in the southeast and more to be found squeezed onto calm stretches near pounding surf and clifftop walks in the “green” southwest.
For great diving & unforgettable sunsets the West Coast is prime. Mauritius’s west coast has unbeatable beaches ranging from the fine white sands of Trou aux Biches in the far north to the isolated le Morne on the south-west tip of the island.
Situated here is Grand Baie, which has evolved from a sleepy fishing village into a thriving destination with a small town feel. Boasting some of the island’s best nightlife and restaurants, you can feel the bustling energy running throughout.
