Samburu & Matthews Mountains
Samburu National Reserve and the neighbouring Matthews Mountains sit in Kenya’s arid north, home to species found almost nowhere else in the country: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and the long-necked gerenuk among them. The Ewaso Nyiro River cuts through the reserve, drawing game to its banks even in the driest months, while the forested Matthews range behind it offers a cooler, greener contrast and good walking safaris. The Samburu people’s culture is as much a part of a visit here as the wildlife itself.
