Lamu
Lamu Old Town, on Kenya’s northern coast, is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for it. Cars are banned from its narrow streets, so donkeys and dhows still do the work, and carved wooden doors and coral-stone houses reflect centuries of trade with Arabia, India and beyond. Days here move to the tide, with dhow sailing trips and long lunches on the waterfront. It is a genuinely different side of Kenya to the safari circuit.
