The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans cover some 12,000 square kilometres of cracked white earth, one of the most striking landscapes in Botswana. By day the pans stretch flat and silent to the horizon, broken only by islands of palm and centuries-old baobab trees. Visit after the rains and the scene changes completely, as zebra and wildebeest arrive in their thousands for one of Africa’s great, lesser-known migrations.
